Volker Haug Studio, founded in 2004, is a decorative lighting practice based in Melbourne. The studio creates lighting informed by a sense of discovery and experimentation, with works produced by a skilled team of designers and makers. With a focus on pared back, immaculate designs imbued with a sense of playfulness and individuality, the studio has established a long tradition of detailed, elegant lighting.

Operating from a converted 1940s warehouse, the Volker Haug Studio team work collaboratively to produce their designs. With the liberating ethos that any new idea is considered achievable, they are encouraged to explore unconventional materials and methods, resulting in works that are unique and adventurous, while always retaining the studio’s signature clean, rational aesthetic.

“I lived in Berlin during the early 1990s just after the wall came down. I recall it being an intense and transformative time both personally and politically. A city that was segregated suddenly opened
up and along with its borders, people’s thinking expanded. It was a city that had literally been broken, but by operating as a community there was the possibility to rebuild something new together.”

The Volker Haug Studio team set themselves exacting standards in both designing and producing. Metal is the studio’s material of choice, and its treatment is the cornerstone of the design process. During production, precision machining is complemented with hand finishing, retaining a sense of connection between the material and the maker. The results are tactile in nature, inviting touch. With each piece being assembled and finished by hand, the studio’s consistently high benchmark for quality is ensured.

Aesthetically, the studio is known for its forging line-work, solidarity of form, and pieces brimming with personality and character. Distinctive in their deceptively simple designs, their uninterrupted lines hide complexities and draw the viewer’s eye to the form and finish of the work. References to industrialism are filtered throughout, lightened by a preference for simple form and economy of design. Each piece aims to convey a sense of whimsy while remaining grounded by the principles of balance and proportion. Throughout the studio’s years of operation, the Volker Haug signature of placing the lamp at the forefront of the design remains a constant element of the composition.

Designed with longevity in mind, the studio produces every order to the unique specifications of the space each piece will inhabit. In addition to their customisable decorative ranges, the design team work on site-specific projects and limited edition works.
