TOMOYA SAKAI
I met pottery at university in 2013. I throw clay on a pottery wheel and spread it vertically with my hand.
Then I am always fascinated by the feeling of tension, the centrifugal force, and the touch of clay changing its shape in my hand.
The kiln firing is like a holy ritual and gives me an unusual excitement. The pottery has something which makes me feel I am alive now. I keep working on it to seek for such feeling. I always create works using a pottery wheel.
The shapes of clay made through the spinning of the pottery wheel are associated with natural objects, architectural structures, the scenes of animations and movies, etc. I create various works by being inspired by such images.
These days I reorganize and assemble chaotic images existing in my mind, using several parts produced by spinning the wheel. Thus, I try to express my imagined sceneries and create new images.
