Avoirdupois “Objects of Weight” operates a vertically-integrated furniture and lighting manufactory in lower Manhattan. All facets of production are completed within the multi-level studio on Varick Street including CNC machining, robotic machining, welding, annealing, heat treatment, fabrication, finishing, woodworking, upholstery, ceramics, electronic design, engineering, testing and final assembly. All pieces are designed and engineered by James Stumpf and fabricated under his supervision. Manufactory visits permitted by appointment only

James Stumpf is one-half designer and one-half engineer with a deep understanding of material properties and a deeper desire to create an original collection with no self-imposed limitations on mechanical complexity or technical accord. All facets of Collection No1 / Tripartite were singularly designed, engineered, built and finished in his SoHo workshop over a 2-1/2 year period. Limits were self-imposed on ornamentation, with a singular motif forming the basis of every piece; a vast number of materials were explored to keep each piece unique but also unified within the collection.

Collection No1 Tripartite as a collection is the visual division of three. Every piece shares commonality with a single triplicating motif running through the entire collection in discernible and ambiguous ways. Aluminum and silver tones were prominently featured. The triplicating motif was explored in a multitude of materials including veneers, lacquers, hardwoods, metals, plastics, bentwood, plywood, porcelain, upholstery and natural caning. All pieces are numbered to represent their inclusion in Collection No1, said numbers are all divisible by three.
