A womenswear brand founded on bold graphics infused with simple modernity.
Launched in 2014, the Chinese fashion designer duo, Cynthia Mak and Xiao Xiao, work together to bring out a collection that blends together Cynthia’s background in graphic and fashion design, as well as Xiao’s expertise in knitwear design. The garments combine a striking and bold character with minimal and easy shapes.
Born in Hong Kong with an international upbringing, Cynthia was first exposed to arts through her studies in graphics design. Later, she decided to attend the Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design to pursue her interests in design. There, she was immersed in a sea of young, talented fashion students whose passion and skills ultimately inspired her to begin her new journey in fashion.
Starting afresh in a new field, she devoted her life to learning about fashion and garment construction. With her enthusiasm and endless hours of work, she successfully graduated from CSM with distinction. Her strong final collection also garnered her praise from Italian Vogue where she was selected as a designer to watch out for and included her in their list of “New Talents”.
After working in Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Preen by Thorn- ton, and Roksanda Illincic, she returned to her hometown and worked at various large scale luxury fashion retailers. However, her ambition remains in the line of fashion design and consequently established Cynthia & Xiao together with knitwear specialist Xiao Xiao in 2014.
Xiao Xiao was born in Beijing and moved to UK in 2002. During her earlier studies in ne arts and textiles in high school, she discovered her interest and talents in merging artwork with fashion. For further studies, she at- tended Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design. Encompassed in the great artistic environment, she explored many different ways of expressing her creative ideas through fashion design and eventually re- solved to enter the field of knitwear.
After successfully graduating from CSM, with her multicultural back- ground and varied work experience in the UK fashion industry, she decided to move back to China to develop her career. To acquire a deeper understanding of the Chinese fashion market and to prepare herself for the launch of her own label in the future, she worked with local Chinese design company WO square. During her time there, she gained real life experience of the design process from scratch to final production and built up a strong pro le of work.
After years of preparation, Xiao Xiao joined forces with Cynthia. As a knit- wear specialist, Xiao Xiao was excited to bring her fashion and knitwear skills to Cynthia & Xiao.
